Evergreen tree originating in South America cultivated in India and in some African areas of which one uses the bark.

Cinchona was the source of quinine used because of its effectiveness with malaria before the parasite has developed a resistance. Cinchona bark is also tonic and febrifuge, used against fever and to stimulate digestion.
